How we help the designers cope with "look-a-like" ?
Think like minded as Chinese manufactures
Every day, multiple Chinese manufactures sit together and think about how they can produce other people's products cheaper.
We receive daily emails from manufactures, contacting us and bragging about how they can make our products cheaper than our existing manufacturers. However, we, the designer, should keep a close relationship with these manufacturers in order to find out the real cost of the material.
Keep in mind: higher cost does not equal higher quality. Finding out the real cost through these manufacturers allows us to define the right price strategy and eventually to make the right decision on MSRP. In the worst-case scenario, we need to prepare for a (periodic) price war. If one does not correctly calculate the cost and MSRP than someone will certainly lose out.
The decision making on retail price
The crucial role of every CEO/founder is to make the right decision on pricing strategy. Price strategy is not fixed in time and varies per market/country. The most challenging price decision is for the Chinese market, which is the most hostile marketplace.
We advise a NON-profit price strategy to limit the growth of copycats in China. In order to do this, you need to find out what Chinese consumers are willing to pay for your products. If you don't do that, at least one Chinese out of the billion will do it, and the People's Republic of China will thank you for creating jobs.
Online platform control
Alibaba, Amazon, Wish.com, and AliExpress are built merely to help Chinese manufacturers steal the world's market directly and ignore all market order and intellectual property rights. DesignNest has a dedicated team every day to scroll through these platforms and get the unauthorized resellers/manufactures offline. We offer this service for FREE.
Patents, trademarks, NDA contracts, and QR codes
Applying patents in China is strongly advised. The purpose is not to sue copycats, but to not be ironically sued by them. We even experience our suppliers that apply patents to products we have outsourced to them. QR codes help avoid your supply chain selling behind your back. Trademarks give you relatively the most protection, while a contract does not mean anything. Do not be too protective; be open-minded to learn the logic of the consumer product industry.
A long-term vision: the DesignNest co-branding
The vision of DesignNest is to help designers/creators bring their creative design products to consumers worldwide. The co-branding strategy will make DesignNest become the world's first renowned trademark in the product design industry. Therefore, becoming reliable protection for all the designers/creators who partner with DesignNest.
DesignNest is a non-exclusive, non-binding, open- source, and free-of-charge platform. Designers/creators own 100% of their products and are free to sell to whomever they want.
